The forthcoming Celestial Chorus concert at Carnival City is shaping up to be more than just a musical showcase. It is a statement on the growing strength of regional collaboration within the gospel music space.

Headlined by Zimbabwean gospel musician Everton Mlalazi, who serves as musical director, the event marks a significant cultural moment as the Celestial Chorus brand crosses borders, taking a distinctly Zimbabwean-led worship experience onto a major South African stage. In doing so, it reinforces a broader shift within the industry, where artists are increasingly embracing regional platforms to expand their reach and influence.

The move into South Africa is both strategic and symbolic. South Africa remains one of the continent’s most vibrant gospel music markets, with established audiences and large-scale production standards.

By staging the concert there, the Celestial Chorus is not only tapping into a wider audience but also positioning itself within a competitive and influential musical landscape.

What makes this event particularly compelling is its emphasis on unity through music. The line-up blends Zimbabwean and South African gospel talent, creating a shared space for worship that transcends borders. Among the performers are notable South African acts such as Dumi Mkokstad and Mthunzi Namba, alongside Zimbabwean voices including Sharon Cherayi, Natasha Mlalazi, Petronella Sengwayo, Tawanda Midzi, Rudo Madindi, Fisani Masina, Janet Manyowa and Canaan Nyathi.

This blend of talent reflects a deliberate effort to bridge musical and cultural divides, while showcasing the richness of gospel traditions across the region. It also signals growing confidence among Zimbabwean artists to export their sound and concepts beyond national borders.

Central to the concert’s appeal is the ambitious production scale. A 100-piece symphonic orchestra—comprising musicians from different parts of the world—will provide the musical backbone, offering a layered and immersive worship experience.

Such a production not only elevates performance quality but also aligns the event with international standards, further enhancing its regional significance.

Equally important is the accessibility of the concert. With free entry, the event opens its doors to a wide audience, removing financial barriers and reinforcing the inclusive nature of gospel music.

This approach is expected to draw thousands of attendees, creating a communal atmosphere that is both celebratory and spiritually engaging.

The involvement of Afrotainment, led by DJ Tira, adds further weight to the event. Known for delivering large-scale productions, the label’s backing ensures a level of professionalism and execution that is critical for an event of this magnitude.

Beyond logistics and performance, the concert carries a deeper message about the role of gospel music in fostering unity. In a region often marked by economic and social challenges, such gatherings provide a platform for collective expression, hope and spiritual connection.

Commenting on the event, music director Mlalazi said the vision behind the Celestial Chorus extends beyond entertainment, positioning it as a unifying force.

“This event is more than music. It’s a gathering that unites nations and serves one cause, which is to praise and worship God,” he said ahead of the show.
