Washington Mapeta said they were finalising the collation of data gathered during the census exercise.
“We will be making public preliminary results of the population census in mid-December. Right now we are finalising analysis of the data gathered,” said Mr Mapeta.
“By next week, we should be able to release the figures of the population census in terms of how many people the country has.”
Zimstart, he said, was analysing data stored both manually and electronically.
Mr Mapeta, however, said Treasury was still to release money that was outstanding to pay enumerators who participated in the census.
The Treasury still owes more than US$10 million to enumerators who participated during the August 17 to 27, 2012 census.
The last round of disbursement was used to pay enumerators in Matabeleland North and South Provinces, he said. Zimstat, said Mr Mapeta, had submitted a proposal to Treasury in which the money would be staggered for three months starting from October. This was after Treasury had indicated that they had no money to make a once off payment. Mr Mapeta said Treasury, however, subsequently released a fraction of the money that was used to pay enumerators for two provinces. He did not, however, say how much each enumerator got. The census ran from August 17 to 27, 2012. Zimbabwe’s last population census stood at 14 million people.
This is the fourth population count. Other census were held in 1982, 1992 and 2002.
