CHAMINUKA Rural District Council has intensified efforts to develop Shamva by resuscitating a piped-water scheme in Goora area and Chaminuka Vegetable Market which had deteriorated since their inception after Independence. The local authority has also completed working on the 26km Bindura-Shamva Road which took 26 years to complete.
Officially opening the Wadzanai Vegetable Market on Tuesday, Minister of State for Mashonaland Central Provincial Affairs Advocate Martin Dinha urged the authority to expand the market due to the increasing demand of market places.
“I am impressed by the development in Shamva. The road from Bindura to Shamva took 26 years to complete, but with the coming in of the new dispensation, we have witnessed positive developments.
“The vegetable market creates employment and sustains livelihoods of many families in Shamva and communities within its 20km radius. Chaminuka RDC is blessed with resources, therefore, increase efforts towards attaining a town status to attract more investment.
“I am worried that more people outside Shamva have residential stands here because the local populace cannot afford the prices.
“I urge you to lower the charges such that local people can own houses,” Adv Dinha said.
Chaminuka RDC chief executive officer Mr Sydney Chiwara said the township started with 100 households, but now boasts of 2 350 households and a population of 5 000 people.
