Champions Scottland hit top form to end first half on high

SCOTTLAND ended the first half of the season exactly where champions expect to be — at the top of the table. With closest challengers CAPS United and Hardrock having dropped points a day earlier, Norman Mapeza’s side knew a win against struggling Triangle would count for more than just three points. They delivered a composed and convincing performance that underlined both their growing confidence and their strong claim to the title.

The victory was their fourth in a row and extended a run of form that shows Scottland are hitting their stride at the right time. It also unlocked a financial reward promised by club owner Pedzai “Scott” Sakupwanya, who had pledged a US$5 000 bonus to each player if they reached the halfway stage at the top. Unlike last season, when they trailed rivals MWOS at this point, Scottland now find themselves firmly in control of the title conversation.

The match took a decisive turn early on when Triangle defender Enock Karembo was sent off for bringing down Khama Billiat as he looked set to break through on goal. Up to that moment, the visitors had been organised and competitive. Once reduced to 10 men, however, they were always going to struggle against a confident Scottland side.

Scottland dominated possession and controlled the tempo of the game, but they still had to work hard to break down a determined Triangle defence. Jordan Pedra stood out at the back for the visitors, and for much of the first half it looked as though they might hold on until the break.

The breakthrough eventually came through persistence rather than flair. Knowledge Musona, in fine form, chased down Triangle goalkeeper Panashe Nyabunga near the centre circle after the keeper had ventured too far from his area. The pressure paid off. Billiat reacted quickly to win the ball and set up Musona, who calmly slotted into an empty net. It was a simple goal, but one that shifted the momentum firmly in Scottland’s favour.

After the break, Triangle showed some fight. Lloyd Chitembwe’s side pressed higher and moved the ball with more purpose through Nyasha Chintuli and Jayden Bakare. For a short spell, they looked capable of testing Scottland.

However, the gap in quality between the two sides soon became clear. A lapse in midfield allowed Scottland to break quickly, and a tidy exchange between Panashe Mutimbanyoka and Billiat opened up the defence. Billiat made no mistake, finishing with composure to double the lead.

From that point, the result rarely looked in doubt. Triangle had moments of possession but struggled to create clear chances. Bakare forced a save from Nelson Chadya, but it was one of few meaningful efforts as Scottland stayed in control.

As Triangle pushed forward in search of a goal, they left spaces at the back, and Scottland took full advantage. Defender Mohammed Issaka joined the attack and beat Nyabunga at his near post to seal the victory and cap off another strong display.

The defeat leaves Triangle rooted at the bottom of the table with just nine points from 17 matches. While survival is still possible, they now face a difficult task and must start turning performances into results.

For Scottland, the outlook is far more promising. They have momentum, confidence and a firm grip at the top — exactly where title contenders want to be at this stage.

“I think we played well and the turning point was when they got that red card. I am happy for the boys and everyone at Scottland. It was a good game and the quality was showing,” said Mapeza.

Chitembwe admitted his side could not maintain their early effort.

“I thought we played well in the first half but fizzled out in the second. The quality at Scottland is always a huge factor.”
