SOUTH Africa-based artiste and preacher, Rashid Sean Maulana, has quit dancehall for gospel music.
Better known as Apostle Sean, the singer who has changed genres, promised to use his talent to spread the word of God.
Speaking to H-Metro from his base in Johannesburg, the Glen Norah-bred singer said it was never too late for people to turn to Christ for salvation.
“I started off as a dancehall artiste who was called into the apostolic office, hence I changed my music to gospel and social commentary.
“I moved to South Africa in 2015 doing dancehall music and in 2020 I released a gospel album called Musandinamata which has 14 tracks on July 10 featuring Tocky Vibes, Bethan Pasinawako, Kabhidha and Tinashe Magacha,” he said.
Last weekend, Apostle Sean launched his single titled Father’s Lecture on Star FM.
It promotes the girl child’s rights.
Outlining his vision as a gospel artist, Apostle Sean was blunt.
“I would like to have a positive impact in society through positive messages that I preach through both music and other charity stuff that I do.
“Many people will be shocked that I am an apostle and of all the people Prophet Makandiwa is my inspiration.
“When I see young people of my age succeeding, it drives me too, as my moto is ‘excellence in all’,” he said.
Before finding Christ, Apostle Sean said he was a naughty boy.
“I recall how I grew up in my neighbourhood as a person who would cause problems any time of the day. By then, nobody loved me, but God changed it all. I’m now the people’s favourite,” said the singer, who finds comfort in his new calling.
Apostle Sean said his deep-seated passion for music started at a tender age.
“I loved music even before I knew what loving is. I just saw myself enjoying it whenever I saw people doing music whether on stage or on radio, so I can say I was born with it,” he said.
Apostle Sean has also started a church in Johannesburg.
“I have started a church called Jiam Ministries. Jiam means Jesus in action movement. Ministry is my daily life and music occupies my free time so it’s a balancing act because music covers up for my lonely time.”
Apostle Sean said he started his ministry after months of despair.
“At one point, I lost everything in life and failed to do anything successfully. I was having bad luck in all I was doing and when I was thinking of giving up and engaging in careless living, Jesus called me into the ministry.
“I started a WhatsApp group which grew and people from all corners of the world started looking for me. I then decided to form a church and it is growing,” he said.
“Let’s keep focused and tackle all challenges in our country. Hard work, focus and determination will one day pay. Let’s stay away from drugs,” he said.
