CHIREDZI Town Council internal auditors have uncovered a scam involving some senior managers, amid revelations that about $31 000 is missing from council coffers, a recent full council meeting revealed. The missing money was detected in one of the council’s accounts and was exposed by missing receipts during audit. While no-one has been fingered to have been responsible in the embezzlement of council funds, which sources say could have been going on for long without being detected, officers in the accounts department have been asked to write reports with some officials on leave having been called back.
Some of the missing receipts are believed to be for residential stands.
Council chair Mr Francis Moyo confirmed the new development and said heads will roll once those responsible have been exposed.
“I can confirm that there are irregularities that were uncovered by our auditors within the council’s accounts department. There are serious fraudulent activities going on and so far it was discovered that about $31 000 is missing from council books and it is obvious someone is responsible and truly, some heads will roll,” said Mr Moyo.
He said it is now apparent that personnel entrusted with handling financial matters have been converting money into their own use.
“Investigations are still in progress and indications are that there could be more money involved in the scam. It will be known after investigations are completed,” he said.
It seems it never rains for Chiredzi Town Council as the local authority’s fleet of 15 light vehicles and other removable property were during the same week attached by the Deputy Sherriff over a $127 000 debt.
