CHAOS continues to haunt the Zimbabwe Handball Federation after the extraordinary general meeting that was scheduled for last week at Girls High School in Harare failed to take place.The meeting was called for by ZHF councillors after holding a consultative meeting with the Sport and Recreation Commission last month.
The councillors were expected to come up with a date for the postponed elections which were initially set for March 31 in Kariba after the expiry of term of office of the current national executive.
They were also expected to come up with an election procedure as well as table the status quo of three provinces — Harare, Matabeleland North and Matabeleland South — and the financial report.
However, the extraordinary general meeting could not take place after most of the ZHF members failed to turn up at Girls High last Friday and they had to move it to May 16.
Outgoing ZHF secretary-general, Alphios Magiya, said they are now set to meet this coming Saturday at the same venue.
“We could not constitute the quorum so it was adjourned to May 16 at Girls High School.
“Actually we were 10, we were short of two people because we are supposed to be 12. It should be 50 percent plus 1,” said Magiya.
The Sports Commission have already expressed their disappointment over the postponement of the elections.
Earlier Magiya said they were given a 14-day period to hold the elections which expires today.
However, the outgoing ZHF secretary-general said there won’t be any problems since they are just following their constitution after failing to form a quorum.
“The Sports Commission have no problems (with us) as long as we are following our constitution and we are within the jurisdiction of our constitution.
“On Saturday we do not need to form a quorum because our constitution states that if a meeting is adjourned to a later date there won’t be need to form a quorum. The present members’ decision will be binding.
“I think the main drawback was that it was a Friday and most people had work commitments. Most of the guys gave their apologies because they were committed, so we said let’s have our meetings on weekends.
“The agenda remains the same and we will come up with the electoral procedure,” said Magiya.
The current executive is led by Amon Madzvamuse but their term of office expired on March 31 prompting the need to hold elections that will usher in a new executive to run the association for the next four years.
Meanwhile, the Young Masters Handball Club and the Western Cape Handball Association of South Africa have invited Zimbabwe to send a boys Under-17 team and a girls Under-15 side to an international tournament scheduled for August 1-2 in the Mother City.
The GeBe-Foundation, a Cape Town-based non-profit making organisation, in partnership with the Young Masters Handball Club and the Western Cape Handball Association are the organisers of this tournament.
