Chapman Grand slam tourney on cards

Recent events in the big amateur tournaments have shown that any one of the better golfers can take away the honours, but with action returning to more familiar territory for the top amateurs, the majority of whom are based in Harare, normal service is expected to be restored this weekend.

Given their consistent performances in recent weeks, the Chapman trio of Christian Mbanga, Thembelani Vundla and Nguru among others will be fancying their chances on the challenging course where golfers have always struggled to break par.

Even last year’s winner, Vincent was on vacation when he won the event as he prepared to get a place in the Eisenhower trophy team.

Nguru, for his part, already has a huge title under his belt this year following his triumph at Bulawayo Golf Club in the Zimbabwe Amateur, which he followed up with the best amateur title at the Open classic.

And after seeing his promising challenge for the same title last year go up in smoke after he could not match Vincent he could find the champion’s absence added advantage this time round.

The other on-form golfer, Biggy Chibvuri, who has been doing well in the major tournaments but has still not managed to break his duck, will also be hoping that the Chapman Grand Slam finally provides him with the perfect setting for a maiden major victory on the Zimbabwe Golfers Association (ZGA) circuit.

The event is having several winners with the 2011 title won by Munashe Madhodha as Vincent won the 2012 edition and this year it remains to be seen who will do well.

The ZGA president Boniface Chigorimbo is happy with the level of competition the players have shown since the last two outings.

“We are having different winners since the Rowland Park Open and the Manicaland Open so we look forward to competitive outings,” Chigorimbo said.
