CHAPMAN Golf Club Team A successfully defended the Julius Robinson Trophy at Wingate over the weekend. The team, made up of seasoned campaigners, held their game together in challenging rainy conditions.Clive Nguru, Thembelani Vundhla, Stuart Krog and Steven Simukayi featured for Chapman Team A and finished the two rounds on 603 points overall to retain the trophy.
The Royal Harare team of Garry Thompson, Graeme Cremer, Kiren Vincent and Gerald Shwabane were runners-up on 606 points.
The event saw over 70 amateurs taking to the field in the first tournament of the season. The Julius Robinson Trophy has this year become the opening event after the postponement of the Dugmore Trophy which was supposed to be held in Bulawayo.
The Dugmore Trophy could not be staged as the course was flooded and the tourney has now been re-scheduled for next month.
Last year Chapman dominated again but they were challenged all the way by Royal Harare who had a strong team that featured Ben Follet-Smith and Thompson.
Former MidWest Rhinos cricketer, Graeme Cremer, who is now taking golf seriously, said he was happy to compete in a different sporting discipline.
“I am playing off two handicap now and it is good that I am doing well and the Wingate course is challenging especially if you miss the fairway.
“We were very competitive and to represent a club like Royal Harare, at a national event, is good. I hope to continue doing well,” said Cremer.
