Chapungu 2018 season preparations face crisis

GWERU-based Premier Soccer League outfit Chapungu United faces a crisis in the run-up to the 2018 season after the majority of its players were conscripted for military training.

Club chairman Hillary Jonah confirmed the developments, but referred further questions to club director Air Commodore Elisha Masakadza, who, however, refused to shed more light.

“It is true, but talk to team director Air Commodore Masakadza,” said Jonah.

Masakadza said: “I can’t comment on that.” Sources at the Air Force of Zimbabwe-owned Premiership side said coach Tendai Chikuni would have to literally build a new side for the 2018 Castle Lager PSL season, as a large number of his first team players will be undergoing military training.

Military training takes more than six months, meaning the players would only be available in mid-season if they’ll be allowed to return to the club.

“It’s back to square one for the coach. He has to build a team from scratch, although he will mould it around a few already attested members of the force, such as Phillip Marufu. All those youngsters are going for military training,” said a source.

Chapungu finished the 2017 season in 11th position after managing 11 wins, 11 draws and 12 losses in their 34 games.

Their 2017 season took off rather sluggishly, with the side only recording its first win in Week 9 after beating Harare City 1-0.

At one time Chikuni’s future at the club looked uncertain, but the club’s leadership kept faith in the young gaffer. — @skhumoyo2000
