Chapungu clinch inaugural Heart Cup

AS largely expected, Chapungu claimed the inaugural Heart Cup after thrashing Black Mambas 4-0 at the Heart Stadium yesterday.

And, the architecture of the Heart Cup, Prophet Walter Magaya, wants to introduce the same tournament in the Castle Lager Premiership if he gets the nod from the league’s leadership.

Magaya hosted 16 clubs at his hotel for the Heart Cup, which got underway last Tuesday.

From the first whistle, it was clear that Sithethelelwe “Kwinji 15” Sibanda’s troops were on a mission.

The crowd wondered not if, but by how many goals they would triumph.

Nobukosi Ncube opened the scoring, followed by Ethel Chinyerere’s impressive brace.

Mitchell Mhlanga’s late strike sealed the decisive victory, sending the Chapungu Queens bench into raptures.

In a thrilling consolation match, Herentals Queens edged Harare City 1-0 to secure the bronze medal.

Among the dignitaries in attendance were Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Nicholas Moyo, and ZIFA Normalisation Committee official, Rosemary Mugadza.

Several respected figures in local football circles also witnessed the tournament’s finale.

As the Chapungu Queens celebrated their triumph, Magaya revealed his vision for the tournament’s future.

“I’m thrilled with the appreciation shown by all teams,” Magaya said.

“Our vision doesn’t stop here. We’re exploring introducing the Heart Cup to the men’s domestic Premiership, elevating Zimbabwean football to new heights.”

Sibanda also hailed Magaya for providing the platform for the girl child to shine.

“I have a lot to say about this tournament than what we have accomplished. The girls have what it takes to play at the top level but our league has been short of people who are dedicated to supporting women’s football.

“We are grateful for this gesture from Prophet Magaya and we hope this will also inspire the girls to believe that the future is looking very bright.

“I’m happy that the girls did put up a good show to win this cup, it means a lot, and becoming the first club to win this tournament means more to us,” said Sibanda.

Meanwhile, some fans came with placards that begged Magaya to consider becoming the next ZIFA boss.

Magaya told reporters that he appreciated the love and belief people are showing.

But, he insisted that he was going to ask his family whether he should consider their fans’ request.

“I saw the message and it is very clear. And it is something I can never take for granted but at the same time, I will have to seek advice from my family.

“A lot of people have been asking me about it and I think by the end of October, I will provide answers to their request,” he said.
