HIGH-FLYING Chapungu opened a 12-point gap at the summit of the log standings when they edged MSU 1-0 in a tightly contested match at the university on Saturday in a Zifa Central Soccer League fixture.A Tichaona Munyeneyi header at the half hour mark ensured “Waru Waru” collected maximum points to extend their lead to 51 points.
The win also saw the airmen shattering the Central Soccer League record books as they equalled FC Platinum (then Mimosa) who went on a 19-match unbeaten run which saw them gaining promotion in their maiden season.
With the airmen assured of maximum points in fixtures against Gwanda Ramblers, Kwekwe Pirates and Tripple B Academy which have been expelled from the league, Chapungu now need to win four of their remaining matches to gain an unassailable lead to gain promotion into the top flight league after a seven-year absence.
Despite the league championship seemingly within reach, the airmen gaffer, John Nyikadzino believes the battle is far from over and said that they will take each game seriously.
“The championship race is still wide open and for us we just need to maintain the same level of commitment we had since the season started. I am happy to have won the game and our hope is to maintain the form,” he said.
While Chapungu beat the Varsity Sharks, Chrome Stars were edged 0-1 by FC Platinum Under-19s to surrender second position to Town United who collected free points on a walkover decision as they were scheduled to play Kwekwe Pirates.
Silo United failed to fulfill their home fixture against Vumbachikwe for unknown reasons and the latter were subsequently awarded the match on a 3-0 scoreline.
