Dube wins 70km cycling race

NKULUMO “Nkust” Dube won the Flying Eagles Cycling Club 70km elite race in one hour 40 minutes 01 seconds over the weekend.
The race started at the National University of Science and Technology (Nust) and the elite class raced to Esigodini before making a U-turn to finish where they started.

The 10th cycling event of the year in Bulawayo attracted a field of 30 cyclists. The country’s top cyclist, Dube shrugged off a stiff challenge from Thokozani Ncube who came second in one hour 43 minutes 52 seconds and third placed Cornelius Member who clocked one hour 44 minutes 02 seconds.

Dube also won the 30km time trial on Saturday in 47 minutes 11 seconds with Ncube closely behind him in 48 minutes 49 seconds while Gibson Moyo was third in 51 minutes 58 seconds.

Dube won the elite 72km on the Kezi–Matopos Road during the Heroes holiday and he was the second runner-up in the national event held in Harare last month.

In the intermediate category Clive Midiate won the 40km race in one hour 40 minutes 1 second with first runner-up being Alex Welsh in one hour 11 minutes 18 seconds while Knowledge Khuphe came third in one hour 12 minutes 08 seconds.

Welsh was the winner of the last intermediate race held a fortnight ago along Matopos Road.
The intermediate race started from Nust to Chipangali before making a U-turn as well to the starting point.

The Flying Eagles Cyling Club chairman Chrispen Kazingi said they expect to have more races to keep riders active.
“We had a good turnout and a quite a good ride as the times were good, now we expect to have two more events, as riders have to be always kept active,” said Kazingi.
