Waru Waru as Chapungu are affectionately known lost the match 1-2 to the gold miners.
After the match, Chapungu players who felt robbed of a positive result, mobbed and assaulted the match referee Alpheous Makura who sustained minor injuries.
ZIFA Central Region acting chairman Patrick Hill confirmed that investigations into the disturbances were underway and added that the two teams would soon be called for a hearing within the next seven days to ascertain what transpired on the day.
Hill said the region’s disciplinary committee is in the process of analysing various reports on the skirmishes before setting a date for the hearing.
“The disciplinary committee is going through the reports from the police, match officials and the two teams to establish what really transpired on the day.
“The two teams will then be called for a hearing as soon as the committee is through with the reports which should be in a week’s time,” said the Gwanda-based administrator who was also present during the disturbances.
According to witnesses Chapungu players felt the referee had not handled the match well, leading to their loss.
Some of Waru Waru’s players are alleged to have confronted the referee after the match and assaulted him.
Makura is said to have sought shelter where the match commissioner and some security personnel were but that did not help as the angry Chapungu players pursued him.
In 2010, at the inception of the region, Gokwe-based Mateta and Beitbridge-based Border Strikers were expelled from the league after the two teams’ officials assaulted referees.
