Veteran striker Phillip Marufu opened the scoring in the third minute before David Mpofu sealed victory a minute after resumption of the second half.
The result saw the airmen maintaining a four-match unbeaten run in which they have scored 15 goals and conceded just one and top the log standings ahead of Tripple B who have the same number of points but have an inferior goal difference.
Waruwaru will hope that the misfortune which befell them last year does not occur again after they won their seven opening matches before going on a five-match drawing streak which caused coach Innocent Chogugudza to lose his job.
Coach Tom Ruzive who was recruited from fellow military side Tongogara, said his team would not read much into what happened last year adding that they will take each game as it comes.
“We are not worried about what happened last year because that is the past. It is still too early to talk about the championship race now but we will take each game as it comes,” Ruzive said.
Tripple B maintained pressure on the airmen after securing a crucial 1-0 victory over Tongogara courtesy of an Ali Kazembe strike in the 35th minute at Amaveni Stadium in Kwekwe. The result maintained Tshintsha Magiya’s clean sheet as they are still to concede a goal this season together with young moneybags FC Platinum Under-19.
Elsewhere, MSU earned their first point after a goalless draw against FC Platinum Under-19s away at Mandava Stadium while the Willard Khumalo-coached FC Strikers also dropped points away to New Zimsteel after playing another non-scoring draw.
Chrome Stars ran riot walloping a hapless Blanket Mine 4-0 and so did Beitbridge-based Town United who inflicted more misery on newcomers Whawha after a 3-1 victory to condemn the prison side to the bottom of the log without a point.
