THE Premier Soccer League match between Chapungu and ZPC Kariba was yesterday abandoned due to a waterlogged Ascot stadium following a heavy downpour a few hours before the match.
Match Commissioner Japheth Mufiri decided to call off the match before kickoff after referee Makonese Masakadza indicated that the pitch was flooded due to poor drainage.
The pools of water were getting larger and longer and the captains of both teams agreed that the game should be called off.
Speaking to the captains of both teams, Mufiri said the match could not proceed as the pitch was not suitable for play due to water logging.
Mufiri declined to give a comment to the media.
Early this year, the Zifa grounds committee led by Caps United boss Twine Phiri and Caf instructor Wilfred Mukuna condemned Ascot after it failed to meet minimum standards to host a premier soccer league game.
Last month Gweru City Council said it needed $48, 000 to complete the renovations to enable the stadium to meet the required minimum standards.
ZPC Kariba had hoped to exact revenge after going down 3 nil to Chapungu at the same venue in their first 2014 season defeat after a 19 match unbeaten run.
Chapungu were also seeking their first home win after going down 1 nil to Harare giants Dynamos in their last home match at Ascot.
This becomes the second match to be abandoned this season after Caps United failed to fulfil their fixture with How Mine last week Friday.
