A primary school teacher from Bulilima District has been arraigned for illegally selling skin lightening products.
Moment Ncube, 36, of Bezu Primary School told the court that she was trying to earn extra cash by engaging in the illegal activity.
She was convicted of possessing prescribed drugs without a prescription by Plumtree magistrate, Gideon Ruvetsa. Ncube was ordered to pay a $100 fine or spend two months in prison.
She was selling the products to her co-workers and villagers close to the school.
Prosecuting, Clemence Shawarira said police detectives received information that Ncube was selling skin lightening creams.
“On 1 April, police detectives proceeded to Bezu Primary School in search of Ncube. They conducted a search in her room and found various skin lightening products.
“Ncube then led the detectives to her rural homestead which is within the same area where they recovered more skin lightening products,” said Shawarira.
He said the police detectives requested a prescription for the drugs but she failed to produce one resulting in her immediate arrest.
Shawarira said the police detectives recovered 14 by 120 grammes of Extra Clair, one by 120grammes of Carolight, 14 by 15 grammes of Betasol, 14 by five grammes of Epiderm, five by 15 grammes Lemon Vate and nine by 30 grammes of Lemon Vate.
Ncube pleaded with the court for leniency as she said she had a big a family and the money she was earning as a teacher was not enough to sustain her children and relatives.
