Chapusha recalls horror of SA stay

CAPS United new acquisition, Hastings Chapusha, said he has Ishmael Wadi to thank after enduring a nightmarish three-month stay in South Africa.

Chapusha was invited by a Motsepe Foundation Championship side, JDR stars, to pen a two-year contract. But, the Pretoria side’s leadership decided against honouring the former Harare City skipper, with the promised contract.

“I tried to be patient with them because the club’s owner kept telling me that they were working on my papers.  I was made to believe their promises and it got to a point where people in my family started pressuring me asking what was happening.

“I kept giving them the same answers and, personally, I realised that maybe I was being fooled,”

JDR Stars are home to Wadi and Temptation Chiwunga.

He said when the going got tough, Wadi provided him with a shoulder to lean on.

The duo had also played together at Harare City.  “There were no signs of change and at the same time I was supposed to pay the bills back home and feed my family.

“The pressure was too much and I didn’t have the bus fare to return home and when all this was happening, Wadi tried his best to comfort me and had it not been him, things could have gone worse.

“He helped me to return home and I’m forever grateful for what he did to me.”

And, when all this was happening, CAPS United were monitoring his situation.

He was bailed out by Makepekepe after his return last week and he penned a two-year contract.
