Charamba, Makarawu at it again!

PRESIDENTIAL spokesperson, George Charamba’s son and ex-Hillcrest College learner, Makanakaishe Charamba, together with his compatriot, Tapiwa Makarawu, who made history by becoming the first Zimbabwean sprinters to reach the 200m Olympic finals in Paris last year, will be in the thick of things again when they partake in the World Championships in Japan starting on Sunday.
Charamba and Makarawu are part of the Zimbabwe’s group of eight athletes that will represent the country at this year’s edition of the World Championships. Charamba, a former Hillcrest College learner, will join another Hillcrest College product, Vimbai Maisvoreva in Japan.
Charamba, Makarawu and Maisvoreva are already in Tokyo.
National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe president, Tendai Tagara, told Post Sport that the group of the eight athletes that will represent the country in Japan is the biggest the country has ever sent for the global athletics showpiece.
“We are happy as an association that for the first time we are sending such a big contingent of athletes for individual events. We are sending two individuals who will be participating in the 200m race, and that is Tapiwa Makarawu and Makanakaishe Charamba.
“Chengetai David Mapaya will be participating in the triple jump contest. Vimbai Maisvoreva will be competing in the 400m flat. We are also having three marathon runners in Isaac Mpofu and Tendai Zimuto (males) and Fortunate Chidziwo (female).
“We will also have Ashley Miller Kamangirira for the 400m hurdles. The team will be led by Gwanda-based Lisimati Pakhamile and Benson Chauke coach for the marathon. Lewis Banda, the country’s former 400m runner, will be part of Team Zimbabwe as a physiotherapist. We really wish them the best in Japan,” said Tagara.
Charamba and Makarawu will be having their personal coaches in the Japan global competition, while Mapaya, who made his World Championships bow at the Doha meet in 2019, is expected to join the rest of the team on Saturday (tomorrow).
