The tournament featured seven Zimbabwe entries and only Charamba has made the cut.
The golfer went into the Sunshine Tour’s richest tournament through an exemption and did not disappoint. Charamba carded a two-under-par 70 on the first day before firing a level par 72 on the second day.
United States-based Zimbabwean golfer, Bruce McDonald, had a tough time playing in the 209-member strong field that took part. McDonald went into yesterday’s round on four-over-pat 76 and a superb four-under par 68 on the second day made up for most the first day damage. with the cut set at three-under-par after the two rounds, McDonald fell by the wayside. The golfer, who came back home for the festive season, decided to take part in the Jo’burg tournament before he returns to his base.
Ryan Cairns could only manage a five-over-par after two rounds. The golfers who went into the pre-qualifiers of the event all failed to make it. Ignatius Mketekete, Robson Saurombe, Trynos Muradzikwa and Nicky Hough all failed to make it through the pre-qualifiers. Meanwhile, the country’s leading amateur golfer, Scot Vincent, will return to his base in the United States on a high after winning the first tournament of the year. The golfer bagged the annual Ray Stracker Junior Golf Championships at Chapman last week having practiced for a few days.
“I have settled well at college and I am now looking forward to balance things between academics and sport which I know I can manage. The win on my return gives me confidence as l played most of the golfers I am used to playing.
“It was a great game and I have noted a lot of improvements in terms of competition.”
Vincent was four shots clear of ever improving Ben-Follet Smith after four rounds.
