Chatunga arrives back home after paying R600 000 fine

Herald Reporter

BELLARMINE Chatunga Mugabe, son of former President Robert Mugabe, arrived back home last night from South Africa, where he was fined R600 000 and deported.

He arrived at the RGM International Airport just before 9pm.

His co-accused, Tobias Matonhodze, was sentenced to an effective three years’ imprisonment over a shooting incident that occurred in Johannesburg, South Africa, earlier this year.

The two appeared at Alexandra Magistrates’ Court in Johannesburg yesterday, where the matter was finalised before Chatunga was taken from court to OR Tambo International Airport for immediate deportation.

Matonhodze was sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment on count one, 12 months on count two, three years on count three and 12 months on count four, with the sentences running concurrently, resulting in an effective three‑year jail term.

He will be deported upon completion of his sentence.

Chatunga and Matonhodze were both represented by Mr Mike Hellens SC. Court proceedings heard that Chatunga admitted to being in South Africa illegally and to pointing a firearm.

The firearm charge relates to a separate incident said to have occurred two weeks before the shooting at the Mugabe residence in Hyde Park in February.

Matonhodze also pleaded guilty to attempted murder, defeating or obstructing the course of justice, contravening immigration laws and unlawful possession of ammunition.
