Cheating woman found hanged

A WOMAN from Njube suburb in Bulawayo allegedly committed suicide after her husband’s family discovered she was having an extra marital affair. Winnet Mhungu (23), who was married to a soldier, allegedly hanged herself on Monday. Neighbours told The Chronicle she arrived home in the wee hours of Sunday morning from a suspected tryst to find her husband’s sister waiting for her in her bed.

“She was married to a soldier and we’re told that she didn’t sleep at her matrimonial home while her husband was at work. When she returned home at about 5AM, she found her sister’s husband whom she wasn’t expecting at home,” said a neighbour.

The source said Mhungu failed to explain where she had spent the night, raising suspicion that she could have been out with another man. “It seems she couldn’t stomach the issue. It’s sad that she took her life. But it remains unclear what led to her committing suicide. She was found hanging from the roof trusses in her home on Monday morning,” said the source.

Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Precious Simango confirmed the incident saying investigations were in progress. “I can confirm receiving a sudden death report where a 23-year-old woman was found hanging in Njube suburb. Investigations are in progress,” said Insp Simango.

She urged members of the public to find peaceful ways of resolving problems. Insp Simango advised people to seek professional counselling when they are in trouble. The Chronicle yesterday visited Mhungu’s home where mourners are gathered.

A relative who spoke to the news crew said the family’s spokespersons were out sorting burial arrangements. “There’s no one who can comment at the moment because the elders are preparing burial arrangements. She will be buried tomorrow,” said the relative who did not disclose her name.
