A CHEEKY man who had been arrested and detained by security at TM Supermarket in Victoria Falls for stealing a bottle of beer went on to search workers’ handbags and stole a cellphone worth $150 and $148 in cash, a magistrate heard.
Fortune Moyo, 23, of Chinotimba suburb entered the supermarket and emptied a bottle of Robertson wine into a plastic bottle he was carrying and attempted to leave the shop.
He was unlucky as security guards spotted him on Closed Circuit Television, resulting in his arrest.
While in detention in a closet in the shop, Moyo went on to search bags belonging to employees and stole a cellphone and cash.
Moyo appeared before Victoria Falls magistrate Rangarirai Gakanje yesterday charged with two counts of theft.
He pleaded guilty to theft of money and a cellphone but denied stealing the wine claiming he entered the shop with the beer.
The magistrate convicted Moyo due to overwhelming evidence and jailed him for two months.
In his defence Moyo said: “I didn’t take any beer from the shop. I already had some in my container. The things I stole from TM are a phone and some money,” he told the magistrate.
Prosecuting, Takunda Ndovorwi told the court that Moyo was sold out by CCTV cameras when he stole the bottle of clear beer.
“On July 2, the accused entered TM Supermarket and stole a bottle of Robertson wine and poured it in his container. He was spotted on CCTV and the security officers caught him at the exit point and locked him in a room,” the prosecutor said.
“The accused was locked in a room and he searched employees’ bags and stole cash amounting to $148 and a Lumia cellphone valued at $150.”
The court heard that Moyo pretended to be mentally unstable when the security guards searched him and recovered the stolen property.
Police were called in and arrested Moyo.
