ZIMBABWE will on Friday join the rest of the world in commemorating World Environment Day 2026, with authorities calling for collective action to combat plastic pollution and protect the environment.

The commemorations, which coincide with the National Clean-Up Day observed on the first Friday of every month, will be held under the national theme, “A Plastic-Free Environment is Possible – Play Your Part.”

In a statement, the Environmental Management Agency (EMA) said this year’s global theme, “Climate Action,” highlights the urgent need for measures to address environmental degradation and strengthen climate resilience.

The agency said the World Environment Day and National Clean-Up Day campaigns reinforces the country’s commitment to tackling plastic pollution, which continues to threaten ecosystems, biodiversity, public health and livelihoods.

“Improper disposal of plastic waste contributes to the pollution of rivers and wetlands, blocked drainage systems, harm to wildlife and livestock, and environmental degradation,” said the agency.

The environmental watchdog urged citizens across the country to participate in localised clean-up activities, reduce plastic use, recycle waste and dispose of refuse responsibly as part of efforts to build cleaner and healthier communities.

It further underscored the importance of empowering children and young people through environmental education and practical waste management initiatives, saying they have a critical role to play as environmental ambassadors.

The agency said the private sector, recyclers, academic institutions and development partners are also expected to contribute towards sustainable packaging, innovation and circular economy solutions that support environmental protection.

The national commemorations will be held at Mukuvisi Woodlands Nature Reserve and Environment Centre in Harare, while provinces and districts across the country will host various activities to mark the occasion.

World Environment Day is one of the world’s largest environmental awareness platforms and is observed annually to encourage action towards safeguarding the environment.

EMA reiterated its call for collective responsibility, saying a cleaner and healthier future can only be achieved through the participation of all citizens.

“Together, a plastic-free environment is possible,” said the agency.
