Chegutu man jailed four years for stealing woman’s car at a traffic light

A 35-year-old Chegutu man will spend the next four years in prison after he was convicted of stealing a car from a woman in November last year.

Moses Lloyd Hungwe was convicted of theft of a vehicle when he appeared before the Chegutu Magistrates’ Court.

The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) said on November 28 2024, the 37-year-old woman was driving her car heading for Harare along Chegutu-Harare Road when she stopped at a traffic light in Chegutu town at around 2 pm.

“The offender bundled himself into the stationery vehicle through the passenger door. Startled and in fear, the victim quickly disembarked from the vehicle and the convict drove away,” the NPAZ said.

Hungwe was later caught at Bryden Country School, some 4 kilometres east of Chegutu town, driving the car worth US$5 000.

He was was found guilty and sentenced to five years’ imprisonment, of which one year was suspended for five years.

Hungwe will serve an effective four years in prison.
