RELEGATION-THREATENED Chegutu Pirates notched a third successive win in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League as they beat Chicken Inn at the Baobab Stadium yesterday.
In a frenetic first half, Chegutu Pirates grabbed an early goal through Lewis Milanzi before Mpumelelo Bhebhe restored parity.
Chicken Inn’s joy was short-lived as veteran Pirates striker Raphael Manuvire’s shot in a goalmouth melee, at the stroke of the first half, nestled in the roof of the net to seal the win.
Pirates’ victory over Chicken Inn follows similar wins against Bikita Minerals and Ngezi Platinum Stars
Despite three wins in a row, Pirates are still immersed in the murky relegation zone, sitting second at the bottom of the log table
Elated Pirates coach Maxwell Takaendesa Jongwe believes they can still survive the chop.
“I’m quite happy with my boys’ performance. It’s unbelievable. I think God has a plan for this team.
“As long as we are not mathematically relegated we remain in the competition”
Jongwe’s counterpart, Joe Antipas, admitted that they succumbed to early pressure.
“We started very slow and Pirates put us under pressure using their wingers we were too slow to react and they scored an early goal and basic errors cost us.”
Antipas also blamed their ineffectiveness in front of the goal.
“We came back in the second half strong and hit two upright posts and if you miss chances in those situations it becomes tough.”
