DESPITE being on the brink of relegation, Chegutu Pirates are not throwing in the towel yet as they believe they still have mathematical chances of surviving the chop.
Chegutu Pirates are second from bottom on the 18-team Premier League log standings with 26 points, five points below the last team in the drop zone.
Despite the team’s situation, Chegutu Pirates coach Maxwell Takaendesa Jongwe has challenged his charges to fight for survival and preserve the Premiership status.
“We will fight for our status in the Premiership.
“Chegutu Pirates represent a very soccer-loving constituency, which I think is second to Highlanders and we wouldn’t compare them with anyone else in terms of how the community supports its team.
“Hence we would want to fight and fight till the last game to preserve the Premiership status for the constituency,” said Jongwe.
The veteran coach, who remains optimistic of his team’s chances, reckons the task of survival won’t be easy.
“We are just going to take each game as it comes, and we do reckon it’s not going to be an easy task. We remain hopeful that results from other matches will work in our favour.
“We will continue to play until we are mathematically out of the race. There is still a window of hope for us,” said Jongwe.
After picking six valuable points in their last two league matches including a win against defending champions Ngezi Platinum on the road, Jongwe hopes to build on the momentum in their bid to survive the chop.
“It is very important for us to build on the wins and keep the momentum because winning those two matches gave us some hope and boosted the confidence of the players.
“We have been creating chances and fortunately of late converting some of the main chances but what is important for the team and the coach is to create chances,” said the Chegutu Pirates coach.
Chegutu Pirates will face Chicken Inn (home), Herentals (away), CAPS United (home) before concluding the season with a date against Arenel Movers (away)
“The fixture is a bit unfriendly to us. We are going to play Chicken Inn, which has been on a resurgence, then we play CAPS United, which has just hit a purple patch and coached by one the best coaches in the country. These are not easy games for us,” said Jongwe.
