Chegutu tragedy: 20-year-old killed in violent drinking spree, three arrested

A drinking spree in Chegutu, Mashonaland West Province, turned tragic after a misunderstanding degenerated into violence, resulting in the death of 20-year-old Kudakwashe Kandeya.

Kandeya died after he was hit by a hoe, log and sjambok.

Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) national spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, confirmed the incident and the subsequent arrest of three suspects.

“Police in Chegutu apprehended Peter Jaungeti (34), Amidu Tembo (31), and Steven Katirange (36) in connection with the murder case that took place on July 26, 2025, at Rainbowend Farm, Gadzema,” he said.

“The accused, along with their accomplices, Itayi Urayayi (21), known as Chomi, and Shame Kondo, who remain at large, reportedly took turns to brutally assault Kudakwashe Kandeya with a hoe, a log, and a sjambok following an argument during their drinking session. Unfortunately, the victim succumbed to his injuries at the scene.”
