BULAWAYO Chess Association has embarked on an ambitious programme that will see schools in the city competing in monthly tournaments as part of developing and reviving the sport.
Mzilikazi High School will this morning play host to a tournament dubbed “Mzilikazi Festival” where 60 players from 15 schools will compete.
Moses Mutipforo, BCA’s tournaments director said they decided to keep chess players in action after seeing that the number of students who play chess at schools was increasing by the day.
Mutipforo said their long term goal was to have every school in Bulawayo participating in chess tournaments.
“Chess is a sport that stimulates tactical thinking in resolving everyday challenges hence we want pupils to benefit from playing the sport.
We believe that for Bulawayo to remain one of the best in terms of chess we have to keep the sport alive at grass roots level,” said Mutipforo.
