Chevrons aim to seal series win against Ireland

THE Chevrons have an opportunity to seal a series win and move up the rankings in the ICC World Cup Super League table provided they win against Ireland at the Civil Service Cricket Club in Belfast, Northern Ireland, today.

The two teams clash in the last of three one-day internationals currently underway in Ireland. Zimbabwe won the first ODI by 38-runs before the second game was washed out.

Zimbabwe have picked up 25 points from the two ODIs, moving one place up into 12th place on the log standings.

The Chevrons had been at the bottom of the table for a while and will be seeking to make further upward movement on the table.

The ICC Super League is a new ODI competition, which takes place over two years and aims to raise the stakes of bilateral 50-over games. In its first edition, the Super League will help decide which teams qualify for the men’s 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup in India.

The 13 Super League teams comprise 12 ICC Full Members and the Netherlands, which qualified by winning the 2015-17 ICC World Cricket League Championship.

Under the Super League, teams will play eight three-match series each, four at home and four away. Each team gets 10 points for a win, five for a draw, no result or abandonment and nothing for a loss.

Teams that fail to qualify directly will still get a second shot through a qualifier.

World Cup hosts India and the top seven teams from the Super League will automatically qualify, with the bottom five playing in a qualifying tournament, which will feature the best teams from the lower rungs of the competition. — @innocentskizoe
