The senior men’s cricket team, better known as Chevrons, will be seeking a place at the 2026 T20 World Cup when they take part in the first stage of the qualifiers which start today in Kenya.
Zimbabwe will battle it out for a spot at the Regional Qualifiers with five other African countries – Kenya, Gambia, the Seychelles, Mozambique and Rwanda.
The sub-region qualifiers are set to be played in a round robin format with the top two teams qualifying for the regional qualifier where they will join Namibia and Uganda, who received a bye following their participation at the 2023 T20 World Cup and four other teams from sub-regional qualifiers A and C.
The Chevrons begin their campaign today with a date against Seychelles.
As the highly-ranked nation in the sub-region qualifiers, Zimbabwe will not be taking any chances as they would try to avoid surprises at the tournament.
Chevrons coach Justin Sammons is confident of his charges proceeding to the regional qualifiers.
“I am quite happy with what I have seen and we are really optimistic of our chances to qualify,” said the Chevrons coach.
Sammons is not reading much into the rankings of the participating team and remains focused on the job at which is to qualify to the next stage of the qualifiers.
“We have respect for each and every opposition that we are going to play but what is important is to follow up on our process and make sure we achieve what we want to achieve,” said the men’s national team coach.
The Chevrons will hope to build on their warm-up match against the hosts which they won by 63 runs.
Zimbabwe will then face Kenya tomorrow, Mozambique on Tuesday, Gambia on Wednesday and Rwanda next week on Thursday.
