Chevrons fall to New Zealand

THE Lady Chevrons have lost their first T20I against New Zealand Women by 92 runs, with the hosts powered by a breathtaking unbeaten century from Amelia Kerr at Seddon Park, Hamilton.

Batting first, New Zealand Women dominated from the outset, racing to 46/1 in the powerplay before accelerating further through a stunning partnership between Amelia Kerr and Isabella Gaze.

Kerr was at her fluent best, reaching her half-century in just 29 balls with a flurry of boundaries. She continued to dismantle the bowling attack with precision stroke play, eventually finishing unbeaten on 101 off 51 balls, striking 19 fours at a remarkable strike rate of 198.04 — one of the most dominant T20 innings in recent memory.

The 150-run stand between Kerr and Gaze laid the foundation for a massive total, with Gaze contributing a well-made 50. New Zealand surged past 200 in the final over to close on an imposing 202/1 in 20 overs.

Chasing 203, Zimbabwe Women struggled to keep pace with the required rate. They managed 38/2 in the powerplay but found it difficult to build sustained partnerships.

Although Beloved Biza and Josephine Nkomo stitched together a steady 50-run stand, the scoreboard pressure proved too much. Zimbabwe eventually crossed 100 late in the innings but never threatened the target.

New Zealand’s disciplined bowling ensured a comfortable finish as Zimbabwe fell well short, sealing a comprehensive 92-run victory for the hosts.

The match belonged to Amelia Kerr, whose unbeaten 101 set up a dominant result. Her explosive knock not only anchored the innings but completely defined the contest, leading New Zealand Women to an emphatic win and underlining their strength at home.- Zimapers Sports Hub / Cricketworld.com
