Chevrons finish unbeaten and top of the group

ZIMBABWE sent a clear warning to the rest of the field with a polished six-wicket victory over co-hosts Sri Lanka at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo yesterday, extending their unbeaten run and carrying real momentum into the Super Eight stage of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

Any lingering doubts about Zimbabwe’s credentials at this tournament were answered in a performance that blended control with composure against a strong Sri Lankan side that had already secured qualification.

Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to bat, posting 178 for seven from their 20 overs after an aggressive start built around Pathum Nissanka’s fluent 62 from 41 balls. The opener, fresh from his century against Australia, anchored the innings with authority, first sharing a brisk 54-run opening stand with Kusal

Perera before adding another steady partnership with Kusal Mendis.
For a period it looked like the hosts might push well beyond 180, but Zimbabwe’s bowlers pulled things back with disciplined spells through the middle overs. Blessing Muzarabani, Brad Evans and Graeme Cremer all picked up two wickets each while Ryan Burl chipped in with one, with Cremer finishing as the most economical with two for 27.

Pavan Rattnayake added late impetus with a lively 44 from 25 balls but Zimbabwe will feel they managed the innings well after the early pressure, especially given the platform Sri Lanka had built in the powerplay.

Zimbabwe’s reply carried the same calm assurance that has defined their campaign so far. Openers Brian Bennett and Tapiwanashe Marumani laid a solid foundation with a 69-run stand that blunted the new ball and shifted early pressure back onto the hosts. Bennett set the tone with a confident 63 from 48 deliveries, mixing patience with controlled aggression, while Marumani contributed a steady 34 to keep the chase on track.

The decisive push came through captain Sikandar Raza, who produced a sharp 45 from 26 balls in a knock that combined power and clarity at a key moment. His innings featured four sixes and two boundaries and underlined Zimbabwe’s growing belief as they closed in on the target.

Raza and Bennett also combined in a crucial partnership that ensured there were no late nerves as Zimbabwe reached the target with room to spare, sealing a result that will resonate beyond the group stage.

The victory keeps Zimbabwe unbeaten with three wins and a no result after their washout against Ireland earlier in the week, placing them alongside West Indies, India and South Africa as the only sides yet to taste defeat in the tournament.

With the Super Eight stage beginning tomorrow, Zimbabwe now head into a challenging group that includes those three heavyweights, but their performances so far suggest they will not be overawed.

Raza said the focus remains firmly on maintaining standards rather than getting carried away by results.
“We keep our sights forward. If we keep our eyes on the present, I don’t think anyone gave us a chance, a chance to win everyone’s hearts and respect but this is a good position to be in,” he said.

“We have trained for every situation, we have got all those roles clear and that is why you see the confidence in the changing room.”

Sri Lanka captain Dusan Shanaka admitted his side were outplayed despite posting what he felt was a competitive total.

“We had a very good start and the score we put on was good enough to defend. However there were some patches where we could have done better but we take the score,” he said.

For Zimbabwe, the bigger takeaway is not just the result but the manner of it. They have shown they can absorb pressure, recover when momentum shifts and close out games with authority, qualities that will be tested against stronger opposition in the next phase.

The real examination starts now, but on current form the Chevrons have already shown they belong on this stage and they head into the Super Eight with belief backed by results rather than hope.
