ZIMBABWE’S high schools chess powerhouse Cheziya Gokwe High have set their sights on winning a medal at the 2024 Botswana International Youth and Cadets Chess Championship.
The high schools tournament begins tomorrow in Gaborone.
The tournament will see more than 20 high schools from different countries competing and Cheziya Gokwe High coach Blessing Jenami said they were looking forward to bringing home a gold medal.
“We safely arrived in Gaborone on Thursday for the 2024 Botswana International Youth and Cadets Chess Championship where we are expecting to win at least a silver medal.
“We are grateful to the Sports Commission for allowing us the opportunity to take part in such an international tournament. The games help in building the students’ confidence on the chess board and we are happy with the opportunity.
“The school is ready to represent Zimbabwe, and the Midlands in particular, with high esteem. As last year’s national champions, it is our hope that we remain a powerhouse that we are known to be.
“We have managed to take our boys and girls’ teams for the tournament,” said Jenami.
