Chicken Inn reload for Kwekwe clash

CHICKEN INN will be looking to steady their campaign and collect their second full set of points of the season when they travel to face Castle Lager Premier Soccer League (PSL) newcomers Kwekwe United at Gweru’s Bata Stadium on Sunday.

Smarting from a narrow 1-0 home loss to fellow debutants MWOS at Luveve Stadium, the Gamecocks remain stuck in 12th place with a modest haul of nine points from 10 outings, a return that includes just one win, six draws, and three losses. But despite the underwhelming start, Chicken Inn’s camp is refusing to hit the panic button.

“In a game of football you win, draw or lose. We will keep our heads high. We have to keep working hard and try to get the goals coming,” said Gamecocks first assistant coach Fungai “Tostao” Kwashi.

That sense of perspective and patience will be tested this weekend against a Kwekwe United side just two points behind them, second from bottom, and determined to prove they belong in the topflight. The new boys managed a goalless draw against Manica Diamonds last weekend, marking their fourth stalemate of the season.

While still adjusting to the rigours of PSL football, Kwekwe United have experience in their ranks, with seasoned campaigners like Masimba Mambare, Allen Gahadzikwa, and Timothy January in the mix. On their day, this trio has the pedigree and guile to swing results. But perhaps the most significant development in the United camp this week has come off the pitch. In a bold and potentially transformative move, Kwekwe United announced a strategic partnership with South Africa’s Hellenic FC Academy, one of the continent’s most respected youth football nurseries, known for its technical grooming and links to European markets.

“This strategic partnership marks a major milestone in the club’s growth and a bold step forward for youth football development in the Midlands province and Zimbabwe as a whole,” read a statement from the club. Under the memorandum of understanding signed this week, Kwekwe United and Hellenic FC will collaborate on coach and player exchanges, technical support initiatives, and talent development programmes aimed at giving young Zimbabwean players exposure to overseas opportunities.

“This partnership is expected to unlock new opportunities for players to pursue professional careers abroad while also generating much-needed revenue to help sustain and develop the club,” said the club.
Unlike many PSL debutants who focus solely on top-flight survival, Kwekwe United are signalling a grander vision, one that sees football not just as competition, but as a platform for empowerment and long-term growth.

Whether that vision translates into results on the pitch this Sunday remains to be seen. But as Chicken Inn aim to bounce back and Kwekwe United chase their first home win, fans can expect a clash of ambition and resolve in Gweru.
