DIRECTOR sport and recreation in the Ministry of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture Eugenia Chidhakwa was last Friday awarded a Medal of Honour in recognition of her outstanding contributions in the development of sport in the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5.

She was presented with the award during the official opening of the ongoing AUSC Region 5 Youth Games in Windhoek, Namibia.

Chidhakwa has been involved with the AUSC Region 5 for two decades, and has been instrumental in the conceptualisation and implementation of the AUSC Region 5 sport policies and strategies.

Her association with the region began in 2005 when she joined as president of the Women in Sport Foundation in Zimbabwe.

Recognising the need for gender equity in sport, Chidhakwa has been a pivotal force in the creation of the Women in Sport Commission within the AUSC Region 5.

From 2006 to 2016, she served as chairperson of the AUSC Region 5 Women and Sport Committee. In 2016 she advanced to the AUSC Region 5 executive committee.

She continues to serve as the first woman chairperson of the Physical Education, Sport Development, and Recreation Commission among other highlights of her contributions.
