CHIEF Beperere (Alfred Tome) of Zvimba District died on Saturday after a short illness.

Chief Beperere was of the Gushungo clan and a former Harare provincial administrator.

Local Government and Public Works Deputy Minister and Zvimba North legislator Marrian Chombo confirmed the death yesterday.

This is a huge blow to Zvimba North following the death of yet another prominent person from the area.

“Zvimba North has also lost one of the longest serving councillors, Cde Robin Bailes Smith (82), whose tenure stretched for over 30 years,” she said. Alderman Smith died last Friday after a long illness.

Deputy Minister Chombo said the death of Chief Beperere came as a great shock, adding that the province had lost a number of chiefs this year including Chief Mashayamombe, Chief Nyamweda and Chief Nematombo.

Provincial chiefs’ council chairperson, Chief Ngezi (Peter Pasipamire) said the loss of Chief Beperere was devastating.

Chief Beperere was installed as a substantive chief in 2014.

Burial arrangements will be announced in due course.
