He briefly worked for the Ministry of Local Government before joining Old Mutual Insurance company where he worked for 18 years before his appointment as chief in 2005.
During the liberation struggle, Chief Chiweshe was chairman in the then Rhodesia African Teachers’ Association where he was then arrested and detained for nine months for political activism. Mashonaland Governor and Resident Minister Cde Martin Dinha said the chief immensely contributed in the transportation of liberation war fighters in the province who were on their way to Mozambique.
“He spearheaded development programmes in the district and preserved tradition. We regret the premature announcement of his death in the press which was contrary to accepted traditional practises and norms.
“A chief’s death is not normally announced until after certain traditional processes have been conducted. Mashonaland Central has lost a true son of the soil and we share the sorrow and bereavement of the Chigariro family,” he said.
Chief Chiweshe is survived by his wife Onica, seven children and seven grandchildren.
