Chief Dakamela introduces Schools’ innovation challenge on his appreciation awards

IN an inspiring move set to transform the educational landscape of the region, Chief Dakamela announced the launch of the Chief Dakamela Appreciation Awards Schools Innovation Challenge last Friday.

This initiative aims at empowering students to explore their creativity, embrace their cultural heritage, and develop innovative solutions to pressing rural development challenges.

The program, held at Sizane High School in Bulawayo under the auspices of the Imiklomelo kaDakamela Awards, is designed to engage learners from various schools in three exciting categories: The Innovation Challenge, the Cultural and Heritage Challenge, and the Creative Challenge.

Each category encourages students to think critically about their communities while celebrating the rich tapestry of their cultural identities.

“Our culture is our humanity. Through this initiative, we aim to inspire our youth to become custodians of their heritage and pioneers of innovation. We believe that the next generation holds the key to a brighter future for our communities.

” We are looking into culture and fashion. We want pupils to create traditional outfits through fashion and compose songs through music classes and even poems, detailing our history among other things ezesintu.

“We are going to avail certain amount of money to winnners; number 1,2 and 3 so that they can fund their project. We will be funding them if they manage to win after presenting their project during the Imiklomelo kaDakamela Awards ceremony. We will judge by looking at their project, seeing if its positively impacting even our economy in the country,” stated Chief Dakamela during the launch event.

He said the initiative which was launched at Sizane High School is not limited to Bulawayo but expands to all schools in Matabeleland.

The Innovation Challenge invites students to develop practical projects focused on agriculture, climate change, technology, and tourism, with an emphasis on sustainable and impactful solutions.

Meanwhile, the Cultural and Heritage Challenge encourages participants to document and celebrate local traditions, fostering a deeper appreciation for their roots.

The Creative Challenge provides a platform for artistic expression across various mediums, from music and dance to visual arts and theatre.

Chief Dakamela will lead an outreach initiative to encourage schools to register for participation in upcoming workshops and mentorship sessions.

Following discussions with Provincial Education Officers, Dakamela’s team will visit various schools between February 3 and February 15 to facilitate registration.

The workshops and mentorship sessions are set to take place thereafter.

The culmination of this enriching experience will be a grand awards ceremony on April 5, this year, where outstanding contributions will be recognised and celebrated.

Participants will not only gain valuable skills in critical thinking and problem-solving but will also have the opportunity to win certificates and prizes, further motivating them to excel.

“This initiative is more than just a competition; it’s a call to action. We urge schools, educators, and sponsors to join us in this exciting journey. Together, we can ignite the flames of creativity and innovation in our youth, shaping them into the leaders of tomorrow.” Chief Dakamela emphasized.
