Chief hails peaceful pre-election

Chief Nhema has commended Government for ushering in a level playing field that allows all political parties to campaign peacefully during the election period.

In an interview on Wednesday, Chief Nhema (Ranganai Bwawanda) said the prevailing pre-election peaceful environment has never been witnessed since independence.

He said the prevailing peace in his area and Zaka District as a whole was unprecedented, saying that the development should be written in the country’s history books.

“As traditional leaders, we are very grateful to have such a peaceful election in the country,” said Chief Nhema.

“Previously, we have had isolated problems of politically-related violence. Today we express our gratitude to the new dispensation led by President Mnangagwa for creating such a level playing field.”

Chief Nhema said development and prosperity in a society was underwritten by peace and hence the need for people to live in harmony.

He advised political leaders to continue encouraging their supporters on the need to hold credible and peaceful elections.

“As traditional leaders, we shall remain apolitical and continue to avoid partisan politics,” said Chief Nhema.

“However, where there is need to give credit we are bound to do that.

“President Mnangagwa continues to call for peace and unity and we are happy that political parties contesting in the harmonised elections are conducting their activities minus violence or intimidation from anyone.”

Chief Nhema warned perpetrators and instigators of political violence that the long arm of the law will catch up with them.
