VICTORIA Falls, Zimbabwe – Chief Justice Luke Malaba today welcomed delegates at the ongoing 17th Congress of the Conference of Constitutional Jurisdiction of Africa (CJCA).

The prestigious event, attended by representatives from 40 countries, emphasises the theme of: human dignity as a cornerstone of constitutionalism.

In his opening remarks, Chief Justice Malaba commended the Zimbabwean Government for equipping the Judicial Service Commission to deliver world-class judicial services.

He emphasised the importance of the congress as a platform for sharing ideas and experiences related to human dignity and its integral role in human rights.

“Human dignity underscores the primacy of humans and is rooted in the very essence of a person,” CJ Malaba said.

“This focus recalls our collective commitment to the ideals represented by the countries here today, including those from solidarity nations such as Turkey and Russia.”

The Chief Justice highlighted that the commitment to uphold constitutionalism aligns with the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, which emphasises respect for human rights and freedoms. He noted that constitutional courts play a pivotal role in providing leadership in constitutional law, with their decisions holding binding authority over Government policy and legal matters.

“It is essential for CJCA members to convene and exchange ideas on issues of common interest,” CJ Malaba added, reinforcing the need for an effective legal framework that champions inherent dignity.

As the congress continues, delegates are expected to engage in fruitful discussions that will contribute to the advancement of constitutionalism in Africa and the protection of human rights.
