Chiefs appeal to diamond companies

Post Reporter
Traditional leaders in Zimunya and Marange have urged diamond mining companies who were operating in Chiadzwa to honour the pledges they made to channel money towards Marange-Zimunya Community Share Ownership Trust.

The companies made the pledge at the launch of the Trust by President Mugabe in 2012. Chiefs Zimunya and Marange told the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Youth and Indigenisation led by Gokwe-Nembudziya MP, Cde Justice Mayor Wadyajena this week that villagers were suspecting that the money could have been misappropriated. Chief Zimunya said they were under pressure from villagers who were demanding to know the whereabouts of the money and how the remainder would be paid.

Manicaland Provincial Administrator, Mr Fungai Mbetsa, revealed during the meeting that from the $50 million the diamond mining companies had pledged, Marange Resources contributed $300 000, while Mbada contributed $200 000.

He also said that villagers from Chiadzwa who were relocated to Arda Transau were yet to receive their monetary compensation the diamond mining companies had promised.
