Chiefs face Mozambique test

Kaizer Chiefs will next meet Liga Muculmana in the African Champions League after a stout defensive performance from the Mozambican club in their first round, second leg tie on Sunday. They held out for a 0-0 draw in Antananarivo against CNAPS of Madagascar after taking a slender 1-0 lead from the first leg over to the Indian Ocean island, earning praise for keeping their hosts at bay.

SuperSport United’s next opponents in the African Confederation Cup are the Kenyan club AFC Leopards, who looked proficient in eliminating Defence of Ethiopia by winning both home and away.

Leopards’ won 2-1 away in Addis Ababa in the second leg of their first round tie on Sunday for a 4-1 aggregate triumph. Both goals came from Allan Wanga.

Chiefs will host the first leg of their second round tie on the weekend of March 1 or 2. Chiefs will presumably stick with playing on a Saturday night at Soccer City and therefore expect the game to be announced as Saturday March 1 when they make a decision this week. Chiefs got through their first round tie after beating Black Africa of Namibia 4-1 on aggregate.

SuperSport are also home on March 1 in the first leg of their second round tie and travel to Nairobi one week later. The return leg should be on March 8 in Maputo, where Liga will use either the new Zimpeto Stadium, built for the All-Africa Games, or Estadio Machava, which has an artificial pitch.

Chiefs may wish to give the South Africa refereeing team of Kulasande Qongqo, Lindikhaya Bolo, Johannes Moshidi and Daniel Volgraaff a call for some insight on their Mozambcan opponents.

They were in charge of the match in Antananarivo last Sunday with Qongo in the middle and Volgraaf as fourth official.
There were two heavyweight casualties in the Champions League already this past weekend with the shock early elimination of former champions Asante Kotoko of Ghana sand Morocco’s Royal Armed Forces.
