exploitation of natural resources, Midlands Governor and Resident Minister Jason Machaya has said.
Governor Machaya said chiefs should not hesitate to convene courts and fine errant subjects found destroying natural resources.
Governor Machaya – who was standing in for Local Government, Rural and Urban Development Minister Ignatius Chombo – made the remarks at the installation of Mr Zephaniah Mawata as Chief Mazvihwa in Zvishavane last Friday.
“There is a lot of land degradation, deforestation and abuse of natural resources that has been going on and this will only be wiped out with the help of our chiefs.
“People who are found on the wrong side of the law should be punished accordingly. The role of chiefs in national development should not be underestimated as they are the voice of our communities.”
He said chiefs were custodians of culture and Government revered the traditional leadership.
“Most chiefs have benefited from things such as tractors, electrification programmes and generators among others and there is still a lot to come from the Government.
“This is a clear sign that Government is fully committed to improving their welfare as it values their role.”
Chief Mazvihwa said he would uphold unity and work for improvements in general living standards.
“You have to plan with the people not to plan for the people in order to ensure development.
“You have to work closely with your people, hear what they say and together see how they can be helped.”
Chiefs Council representative Chief Ngungumbane challenged his newly installed counterpart to be responsible. He said chieftainship wrangles were detrimental to national development.
The Mazvihwa family had been embroiled in a wrangle for more than 18 years before the installation of the new chief.
Local MPs, senators, district administrators and chiefs attended the installation ceremony.
