adminJohannesburg – Kaizer Chiefs may opt to withdraw themselves from the 2014/15 Caf Champions League due to concerns over finances and “player welfare”. According to the Football411 website, the PSL was awarded two extra continental slots, with Amakhosi, who finished second in the league, bumped up to Africa’s premier club cup competition, while Nedbank Cup runners-up Bidvest Wits have earned a place in the Caf Confederations Cup.
However, Chiefs may now choose to snub the competition, although any decision will only be made next week when head coach Stuart Baxter returns from a pre-season training camp in Port Elizabeth.
“At the moment we are still discussing it and we will wait until the coach gets back from the training camp in Port Elizabeth next week before we make any decision,” Chiefs football manager Bobby Motaung told The Sowetan.
“We have to figure out what is the best option for the club, both in terms of finance and our players’ welfare.”
He continued: “(Bafana Bafana) have the Cosafa tournament and possibly the Africa Cup of Nations coming up during this season, which will see Chiefs players competing.
“Then we have the important second half of the season, which is at the same time as the opening rounds of the Champions League and the big question is do we have the depth in our squad to have our players competing on too many fronts?”
Meanwhile, Bloemfontein Celtic have reportedly refused to release Malawi’s Frank “Gabadinho” Mhango and Limbikani Mzava to this Sunday’s 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Benin.
This has forced the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) general secretarySuzgo Nyirenda to seek the intervention of the Confederation of African Football (Caf) which has since asked Celtic to release the duo even though the second round, first leg game does not fall on Fifa calendar of international events.- Supersport.
