BULAWAYO Chiefs are just a heartbeat away from making their grand return to the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League. One more win, against Bosso 90 this Saturday at Chiefs Village, and the Ninjas will be popping champagne as champions of the Zifa Southern Region Division One League.
A victory will take them to an uncatchable 76 points with two games to spare, sealing a triumphant comeback to top-flight football. But while their fans sharpen their party horns, a dark cloud still looms over the club; the Anesu Saiti eligibility storm.
Hwange and Nkayi United have thrown spanners into the works, filing formal complaints that could haunt Chiefs’ promotion dream. The clubs allege that Saiti, who began the season with Bulawayo City before switching to Chiefs, violated transfer and eligibility rules.
The Zifa Southern Region has since referred the matter to its disciplinary committee for determination.
The bone of contention is that Hwange and Nkayi United claim Saiti played for Bulawayo City against Hwange earlier this year, then featured again for Chiefs against the same opponents in the same season.
That, they argue, taints the fairness of the competition.
Despite the off-field drama, Chiefs coach and fans are focused on the job at hand — finishing the business where it matters most, on the pitch.
