BULAWAYO Chiefs head coach John Nyikadzino has urged his players to stay focused and grounded as they prepare for a difficult Castle Lager Premier Soccer League clash against Herentals, warning against getting carried away by recent results.
Chiefs head into the match with renewed confidence after a hard-fought one-nil win over log leaders Caps United at Rufaro Stadium. It was an impressive result away from home, but Nyikadzino insists it counts for little if his side cannot follow it up.
With only four points separating the two teams on the table, the match carries real significance. However, the Chiefs coach is keen to keep the focus simple — stick to the plan and do the basics right.
“We are not reading much into our past performance. All I can say is we respect our opponents. They are four points ahead of us and they deserve to be where they are. We just have to keep our structure and remain disciplined. We are expecting a tough match looking at their position on the table.”
Nyikadzino knows Herentals will provide a strong test. They are a team known for working hard and staying organised, and their position on the table reflects that. For him, the small gap between the two sides is not about quality, but how competitive the league has become.
He believes the key for Chiefs is consistency, making sure every player sticks to their role from the first minute to the last.
“We are a team that relies on teamwork and if we continue doing that we will get the results we need,” said Nyikadzino.
The coach also spoke about the physical side of the game, especially after the demanding encounter against Caps United. It was a tough match that required a lot of effort, but he is satisfied with how the players have recovered.
“The Caps United game was energy-sapping, but we have had enough time to recover,” he said.
That recovery period could prove important, especially as the season begins to pick up pace. Matches are coming quickly, and teams must find a way to stay fresh while still performing at a high level.
Nyikadzino also pointed out that this season has been very competitive, with no easy games and little separating teams across the table.
“It’s a very competitive season. All teams are geared up,” he said.
That has been clear in recent results, where positions on the table continue to change and closely matched teams battle for points every week. For Chiefs, this means every match matters even more, especially against a side like Herentals who sit just ahead of them.
The upcoming clash presents both a challenge and an opportunity.
A positive result would close the gap and boost confidence, but it will require discipline and focus against a well-organised opponent.
Nyikadzino’s message to his players is simple and consistent: respect the opposition, stay disciplined, trust the system and work as a team.
As the season moves forward, matches like this are often decided by small details. Mistakes can be costly, while concentration and organisation can make all the difference.
For Bulawayo Chiefs, the task is clear — match Herentals’ discipline, limit errors and turn their teamwork into results on the pitch.
