STAND–UP comedian Clive Chigubu was in a league of his own with a sustained series of rib ticklers over the weekend at the Night of a Thousand Laughs show in Bulawayo. Bulawayo Theatre reverberated to more than a thousand laughs on Friday and Saturday night, as comedians produced top drawer performances.
The two nights of comedy gala featured Babongile Sikhonjwa, Ntando “Van” Moyo and a number of budding comedians, who together produced a hilarious exhibition.
In his opening line Chigubu said: “Performing at a festive season comedy event is my best dream beside my wet dreams.” He drew hearty laughter from the crowd that had waited all night for his set.
Famous for his “Yeye” chorus while performing, Chigubu, unlike other comics, interacted with the audience and got them involved throughout his act.
He justified his top dog tag as he had the audience eating out of his hand. But Saturday proved to be a tough day for other comics who had to use the same jokes they had used on Friday, much to the dismay of fans.
Again, Chigubu had to dip into his bag of tricks to save the show with yet another series of gut busters. Budding comedians, Keith Nkosi, John Long and Marshal Olando acquitted themselves well in their debut performance.
They showed Bulawayo has rich talent, planting a promise for fans to look forward to more years of laughter in the City of Kings.
Fans who spoke to Chronicle Entertainment expressed their happiness and thanked show organisers for coming up with the comedy nights.
“I really had fun and enjoyed myself throughout the two nights. They should hold more such events because this was a successful one,” said Lorraine Ncube.
Brian Museva said he had been entertained.
“I never thought it could be this interesting but these guys have made me fall in love with comedy. I will follow their events and hopefully they will hold a similar show in the near future,” he said.
Following the resounding support the show received, organisers have lined up another event to be held at Small City Hall on Saturday.
