Com-Gen Chihuri, yesterday said the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations, had continued to demonstrate faith with the force as it continued to serve invitations not only to peacekeeping duties, but also for participation in identified senior level appointments worldwide.
“We salute you for playing the role of true ambassadors during these trying times.
“You left an indelible mark for the force and the country by proudly hoisting the national flag high in upholding the force’s impeccable track record at the grand stand of international policing.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police will continue to nourish this faith through our time tested and tried emphasis on outright professionalism, good practice and humility in understanding the magnitude of the expectations of the people,” said Comm-Gen Chihuri in a speech read on his behalf by Deputy Comm-Gen Levie Sibanda.
He was addressing 20 officers, including police spokesperson Superintendent Jessie Banda, who recently returned from peacekeeping duties in Liberia, Sudan and Darfur.
Of the 20, four were in Liberia, 11 in Sudan, while five female superintendents were in Darfur.
At least 13 other officers are also expected to leave the country this month on a similar mission in Darfur and Liberia.
Comm-Gen Chihuri said the legacy that had been laid out was a product of accurate understanding of the role of the force as a bastion of confidence of the people they served.
“It is this understanding that we continue to deepen in their hearts and minds of those privileged to serve as police officers.
“When this is deeply rooted, the mind is attuned to withstand any conduct to the contrary.
“Service and servant-hood are therefore the key pillars of the doctrine of good practice, which the ZRP continues to teach and practise,” he said.
Comm-Gen Chihuri said it was gratifying to observe that the ZRP women officers were not only presenting challenges to their fellow male officers, but also at international level, as indicated by their continued invitation to occupy various positions at senior level within the UNDPKO hierarchy.
He said the officers who arrived in the country had arrived at a time when the force was still mourning the death of Inspector Petros Mutedza who was murdered by suspected MDC-T youths in Glen View 3 last month.
“It is painful that the vicious murder was committed with morbid self delight at the shedding of innocent blood by perpetrators.
“We saw political hooliganism and thuggery scaling unprecedented depths when misguided political misfits, cheerleaders and their sponsors fell over themselves to defend and celebrate the heinous crime,” Comm-Gen Chihuri said.
He said the force would not tolerate such unruly elements and would track them down until they were all accounted for.
