The 8th Edition of the SARPCCO games are scheduled to be held in Windhoek, Namibia, in August this year. In 2011, ZRP won 55 medals, 19 gold, 16 silver and 20 bronze, becoming the regional champions and the games were held in Lubumbashi, DRC.
Nine countries — DRC, Namibia, Angola, South Africa, Zambia, Mauritius, Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe — battled for honours in athletics, soccer, netball, men and women’s volleyball, darts and chess.
Speaking during the 2013 CGP Sports Gala closing ceremony in Harare over the weekend, Chihuri said it was his strong conviction that the coaches had selected the best athletes to represent the country during the SARPCCO games.
“Zimbabwe is the defending champion of the coveted SARPCCO Trophy and I therefore challenge you to start preparations now in order to retain the Trophy,” said Chihuri in a speech read on his behalf by Deputy Comm-Gen (human resources) Levie Sibanda.
Chihuri said he was pleased to note that some senior officers were doing very well in sports at national level.
He urged other senior officers to emulate the noble idea and promote the development of sport in the force.
“Let me hasten to say that while Zimbabwe Republic Police still place emphasis on the development of sports persons, there must be a balance between sports and core business.
“This is intended to have sporting activities undertaken in a structured way without members using sporting time as idle time.
“It is clear that from the quality of the organisation of the Sports Gala, that a lot of preparation, dedication and commitment was put into this event. I, therefore, would like to congratulate the commanders, organisers, participants and, indeed, valued sponsors for having worked in unison for all the sound success we have witnessed today.”
